After a long flight from Paris to New York, Lily felt exhausted. As she stepped out of the airport at dusk, the citys skyline was bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, a familiar yet foreign sight.
Wrapping her scarf tighter, she hailed a taxi and headed straight for the Grand Hotel, eager to see Mr. Blackwood, her husband of two years. Their meetings had been few and far between, with the last one being half a year ago when he visited Paris on business.
Entering the hotel suite on the top floor, she was greeted by a breathtaking view of the city. The room was quiet, except for the sound of water running in the background. She stood, captivated by the scenery, until the bathroom door opened, revealing a woman wrapped in a towel.
The woman, realizing it was Lily, quickly covered herself with a robe. "Lily, what are you doing here?" she stammered.
Lily, trying to suppress a smile, simply said, "Hello, sister-in-law."
The woman,, tried to explain, but her words were cut short as Mr. Blackwood,, entered the room. Seeing Lily, he seemed momentarily surprised but quickly composed himself. "When did you arrive?"
Lily gestured to her luggage, "Just now."
He handed the paper bag to , who quickly retreated to the bathroom to change. The awkwardness of the situation was palpable, especially since the woman was his brothers wife.
Thankfully, left promptly, and Lily was left alone with Mr. Blackwood. He offered her a drink, but she declined, stating she wouldnt stay long.
He poured her a cup of coffee anyway, and she accepted it with a "Thank you." Sitting on the sofa, he asked, "What brings you here?"
Lily got straight to the point, "Have you thought about that matter we discussed?"
Mr. Blackwood raised an eyebrow, "What matter?"
"The divorce," Lily replied, reminding him of their agreement that their marriage could be ended at any time.
